Motherboard Earth by Alain Bousquet

Encoded in our DNA is the organic circuitry of life, programming everything from our physical structure to the hardwired commands needed to run, fight, or play. Alain’s series of interlaced circuits create a user interface for the abstract ideas we use to build our world.

"人は私や私の魂というものが存在すると思っているけれど、実際に存在するのは体、感覚、イメージ、感情、思考という一連の知覚・反応を構成する5つの集合体(五蘊)であり、そのどれもが私ではないし、私に属するものでもないし、またそれらの他に私があるわけでもないのだから、結局どこにも私などというものは存在しないのだ。"

This chicken coop by Swedish architect and designer Torsten Ottesjö is designed to look like the protective wing of a mother hen. Situated on a rocky hillside on the west coast of Sweden, the building overlooks an inlet from the sea. The back of the double-curved structure is wrapped in a skin of rough wooden shingles, while the front is clad in wooden slats with gaps to let natural light inside.

“…It its ‘box’ mode, the item is barely extended from the wall. But as you pull the cover down – it turns into a nicely sized workstation, sufficient for a laptop or some writing paraphernalia. The opening on the back for cables and cords and a small storage compartment complete the piece. Also available as a breadbox, using the same system.”

The ‘Bambi’ Table by norwegian designer Caroline Olsson can be used at two different levels – as a coffee table or a small dining table. Thereby the table is inspired by the anatomy of the knee, where the bones can only bend one way. The location and angle of the table legs, as well as the meeting points of the joints, help keeping the table upright and stable. When the table is folded down and used at the lower level it can give you associations to a small foal who has bent its legs and laid down to rest in the meadow, like little Bambi being exhausted from romping around.

Zeroplus by architect and futurist Joshua Brevoort and designer and architect Lisa Chun is working on the intersection of traditional practice of building and urban projects with research based investigations. Located on the Swinomish Indian Reserve, the ‘Sneeoosh Cabin’ is nestled within the trees and gives insanely beautiful views of the surrounding nature. The architects tried to develop a symbiotic relationship with its surroundings and create an ecological model and a retreat from the intense experiences of urban living. It’s about non-disturbance, the efficiency of natural systems and lightness, which can be an elevation of spirit brought on by a rich connection to site.

They split the use of the cabin into two distinct zones; one exposed and one protected, providing a way to enjoy the sensory experience of the forest but to have a warm protected refuge from it as well. By conserving the existing characteristics of the site and connecting to its richness, complexity, beauty, and ever changing qualities it can be observed and understood at all times. A quality that lightens the mind and hopefully contributes to a healthy and nurturing way of living.

‘Cloud’ is a large-scale interactive sculpture created from 6.000 light bulbs, new and burnt out. Constructed by artist Caitlind Brown and collaborator Wayne Garrett, ‘Cloud’ was on public display for one night only during Calgary’s first Nuit Blanche Festival. As part of the process of creating the sculpture, Brown collected burnt out incandescent light bulbs from local households, businesses, museums, and eco stations. The idea was to create an informal collaboration between the community and the artists, reduce costs, and experiment with the potential of items post-use.

LANDSCAPE ABBREVIATED
Sep 11, 2012 · Art

‘Landscape Abbreviated’ by artist Nova Jiang is a kinetic maze consisting of modular elements with rotating planters, which form a garden that is simultaneously a machine. Being interested in the way that simple interventions can make the experience of space dynamic and unpredictable, the planters are controlled by a software program that continuously generates new maze patterns based on mathematical rules. The planters contain live moss collected from the sides of buildings, cracks in the pavement, subway grates and other urban nooks and crannies in New York City’s landscape. Full of particles of broken glass, plastic and other detritus, they form a patchwork of unintentional archaeology. Nova’s work encourages the tactile and creative participation of the audience, resulting in structurally open systems in which joy, disorder and improvisation can thrive.
